Chapter fifteen

The same scene began to play out as moments before. Humans ran around screaming before dropping to the floor, holding each other in tears. The majority of people were still lost underneath the mind-alignment. Wherever Willow was, she was safe. I ran through the grass towards Mom and Dad, glancing out towards the entrance, but Lizzy was gone. My parents locked eyes with me as they crawled towards me. Mom kissed my face, and then my body before wrapping me up into the crease of her long neck, while Dad snuggled in next to us. Since being in this form, all I wanted to do was to scream out, but for now. No words were needed. No matter what we were right now, we still had each other. And for now, my family was the only thing that mattered.

Dad uncurled himself from us. Walking two feet ahead, he looked up towards the sky. If I could talk right now, I would tell my parents to run, we needed to get out of here as soon as possible, before Lizzy found me. But Dad took another step forward, looking up higher as he leaned back on his two back feet. The ground began to shake and Mom hugged me closer to her. I followed Dad’s gaze, looking up towards the sky. That’s when I caught the edge of his wing, flying high above us in the night sky. Donny swooped down, landing metres in front of Dad. I unlocked myself from Mom’s hold and ran back underneath the carriage of clowns. He couldn’t see me, he couldn’t take me with him. I was not going down to the middle of Earth, that was not going to be my life, not without Willow.

Donny slowly stepped forward towards Dad. Dad was the size of two of Donny’s toes. In this body, he could have easily trampled over me without noticing. The untaken humans screamed, running towards the entrance but there was Lizzy again, standing at the door, blinking her eyes towards each one of them as they quickly changed. Freezing and rolling their eyes, they walked around mindlessly, unaware of the giant dragon that stood in the middle of the carnival.

Donny leaned down towards Dad, touching his nose before walking past him. Mom glanced back at me, and then ran towards Dad. Donny kept his nose to the floor, sniffing along the ground until his nose reached the carriage of clowns. He walked towards it, and I backed up further underneath it.

His eye met mine, at least I thought they did. It was hard to tell from the difference in our size. He kept still, lowering his back legs, so that he was laying along the ground. I didn’t know if Donny could talk, but a single look in his eye made me feel as though I could trust him. He stepped forward, reaching the end of his toes underneath the carriage. Remembering Lizzy wasn’t too far away, I stepped further back, but Donny leaned down further.
